Giro di Burnaby 2014

“The Giro di Burnaby is, once again, set to hit the streets of The Burnaby Heights on July 10th, 2014. As part of BC Superweek, the Giro is one of the premiere professional cycling events in Canada, attracting teams from around the globe. The course is a 1.3 km loop featuring a 200 meter downhill straight away past Burnaby’s famous “Swinging Girl” neon sign. With riders reaching speeds of up to 60km per hour, this fast paced event is one of the most exciting the Lower Mainland has to offer.” – Giro di Burnaby website

Mix cycling, excitement, and Burnaby together, and what do you get? You get Giro di Burnaby. An invigorating experience for both the riders and the watchers, one might wonder, what kind of fun awaited the children?

This was where I come in. I had the chance to volunteer as “royalty” at the Giro Kidz Zone, where I helped to decorate the bikes of young attendees for their own miniature bike race. Using streamers, yarn, popsicle sticks, and tape, we were able to create brand new rides for the tiny riders and produce many two-wheeled Ferrari’s and Mercedez’s (also one-of-a-kind).

The children’s energy is contagious. Soon enough, everyone is adrenalized and ready-to-go, whether to watch the race or to participate in the race. I was delighted to see the cheerful giggles from the young ones, which was what really mattered in the end.
