Hi all! Welcome to my blog! I am Ariel, an ambitious sixteen-year-old who is so grateful to be chosen as Miss Teenage Burnaby! This blog shall be the encyclopedia of Ariel since I will use it to document every footstep of mine, as my fellow beauty queens and I take on the long, but fascinating, journey of becoming brilliant role models of our society.
I currently attend Burnaby North Secondary, and I am a grade 10 honours student with a 96% grade average. I am pleased to be admitted to the AP Capstone program for the 2014 – 2015 school year along with 47 other students in the entire district!
At school, I hold my very own hip-hop competitions dance team, where we go around in Lower Mainland to perform and compete, spreading happy and bubbly energy to the community.
I also write articles for the school newspaper, the Viking View, as a hobby and as a practice in journalism.
I am a part of the school’s snow club, where we go to Whistler & Blackcomb Mountain during the winter to ski or snowboard.
I started dancing when I was four, and took my first dance lesson at my preschool. To be honest, I actually did not enjoy it at the beginning, because I was scared of stretching. As time went on I realized it was fun running around in tutus, and because I was so young, I was a very bendy person. Before long, stretching was no longer a problem. My grandma thought it would be interesting to put me in a more advanced dance studio, and off I start to do some serious dancing.
I began playing piano at around the same time due to my mother’s and my fascination toward the agile fingers of pianists. Piano opened doors for me in aspects that I would not have imagined when I was four, as it developed my musicality and trained my mind to be calculative.
With a lot of practice and hard work, dancing and playing piano have sculpted my perspective of the world, which is that if I do not go out and try new things, I will always be stuck in a little bubble, and unlikely to accomplish my goals or to make my dreams come true.
This was how I initiated my start as a violinist in grade 5. Soon after I learned to play the guitar over a summer, studied playing the flute in elementary school band, grasped the basics in playing the keyboard, and attempted the Chinese zither for a year. This was quite the experience, and with my knowledge from piano and violin, playing other instruments was much more straightforward.
I also began sketching in grade 5. During the process of developing my own style of art and, at the same time, drawing objects realistically, I have become a very patient person. I remember when I thought drawing eggs was the most frustrating thing in the world because my eggs always looked demented. Developing this inner peace made myself strong mentally.
I was born in Shenzhen, China, a city right beside Hong Kong. I moved to Richmond, BC, when I was nine, and moved to Burnaby, BC, just last year in 2013. Moving around in far distances has taught me to value my friends and family even more and that it is possible to overcome the tough transition period if we have confidence in ourselves.
Like many others, I was not able to speak English upon landing in Canada. If it were not for my wonderful teachers, my friends, and my family’s support, I would not be the person I am today, standing tall and proud on Canadian soil. I would like to thank everyone and their acceptance in diversity, which is what makes Canada so loved by my family.
With an enthusiastic goal of obtaining a career in the medical field, I would like to help many others in the world who are unable to receive what they need. As of now, I would like to share my knowledge and experience in leadership development to other youths, and my motto is: “Create your own definition of you by staying optimistic and believing in yourself.”
In the upcoming months I would like to donate my time to volunteering around the community and assisting more local events. If you have any suggestions or ideas feel free to contact me through the links provided on the right side. ;)
Thank you for staying with me through my expedition to Miss Teenage Canada :D
