On Tuesday, June 10th, 2014, I attended Youth Volunteer Fair at Richmond Secondary along with my dance crew. This event was organized entirely by youths, who were part of the Richmond Schools Youth Volunteer Association (RSYVA). Over 300 youths attended, and local youth performers were also invited for entertainment. Beini Yin, an organizer of the event, stated, “I really hope youths are inspired after the fair. Our goal was to celebrate volunteerism at the end of the school year and to empower youth to continue giving back to the community and do what they do! It’s truly heartwarming to see all the hard work we put into organizing this event come to life and to see everyone enjoying their time at the fair!” Volunteering is the best way for you to contribute to the community and to make new friends and, through the event, youths were able to find volunteer opportunities presented by organizations all over Lower Mainland! “I had lots of fun [at the event] and I think it was really helpful because I could look for community service and opportunities all in one place,” said Jasmine Yeung, a participant from McRoberts Secondary, Richmond BC. Some advice: when volunteering, find an event or organization that you truly care about, not just one that gives you a ton of volunteer hours and you actually do not much to assist others. You will then have a much more worthwhile experience! I wish everyone good luck in finding opportunities that suit your abilities! ![]() |
