I GOT AN ADORABLE PUPPY! Her name is Jojo and, because we got her when she was pregnant, now we have cute baby puppies crawling around the house.
SO, CORRECTION: I GOT ADORABLE PUPPIES!!!
In English class, we were given the topic "One can truly experience the power of love" for writing an illustrative essay. Watching a puppy giving birth was mesmerizing (is this considered weird?!?). Without a doubt, I decided to describe my experience when I observed Jojo's little moment of delight!
Squeak. Squeak. Squeak. Plump.
She looked a bit scared, but paused for only a fraction of a second, before she leaned forward and ferociously ripped open the membranous sac, containing the baby pup. She gave life to the puppy, letting it take its first breath in our universe.
She then bit her umbilical cord, and the baby squirmed free. The momma puppy licked her baby until its fur was as soft as silk and until its little heart calmed down to a steady pulse.
Twenty minutes later, its sibling came through, but as Mother Nature would permit, the little guy did not finish the journey alive.
We held the second one in our hands. It was so serene, so adorable, but so lifeless at the same time. We urged it to wake up, to take in a giant gulp of air, and maybe to miraculously shout, “I am alive! Just joking! In your face, humans!” but that did not happen. We were still very hopeful and so we carefully placed it beside its momma.
It wasn’t long before the third, and last baby arrived. The mother was at peace. She curled around her darlings to give them a sense of security. She lovingly sniffed them, licked them, and fed them milky nourishment. The night was lengthy and difficult, but we all lived it through.
The next morning we found her cuddled around all three of her children, even the one that moved on to another world. The momma puppy was tenacious, and cared for her lost one like it was never gone.
We didn’t know what to do.
We tried to take the little body away from its mother; however, we received fierce barks and hateful glares. We had no choice but to place it back down.
The momma dog held her child in a tight embrace, providing warmth to the ice-cold pup. She guarded her babies with all her soul, and put up barriers to stop us from approaching. We left her alone and watched her from afar.
When she wasn’t looking, we attempted to remove the baby again, but moments after we found her roaming all over the place, anxiously looking for her child and vigorously digging in the deepest corners of the room.
We felt like criminals.
But we didn’t want to keep a dead body around. If we had the choice to give it life, we would have done so a long time ago. If we could cheat death, we really would.
She then established a routinely schedule: sleep, eat, feed her children, and survey the area to search for her lost one. She did not seem to grasp the fact that one of her child was gone forever. As if she still felt its existence, somewhere in the room.
She was determined to find her child, and we don’t think she will ever stop looking.
