Hello and nice to virtually meet you! 😊 I have recently graduated with an MPhil in Education specializing in Arts, Creativity and Education at the University of Cambridge, and I have a BA in Visual Arts with a minor in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia.
My time at UBC has driven me to work hard in all aspects of leadership and service. As I have represented Canada at Miss Asia Pacific International 2018 in the Philippines, the many women leaders whom I have met around the world have empowered me to strive to be the best version of myself. I served as the President of UBC Sororities in 2020, leading a community of over 800 women. As a woman in STEM, I also took on the challenge to run the biggest female and gender minority hackathon in Canada in 2020, gathering over 280 students over a 24-hour event. I was absolutely thrilled when I had the chance to fly to LA to model for a Victoria’s Secret PINK worldwide campaign, centred on GRL PWR. These women-based organizations have given me a strong foundational belief in the importance of service, where I participated in many community-based philanthropies, including organizing donation drives for Downtown Eastside Women's Centre and volunteering for events promoting women’s health & wellness.
With these experiences and after spending a year working on my Master's dissertation on supporting access to design education through technology, I became very passionate about empowering young people through education. This inspired me to start my non-profit, Girls in STEAM, to create a more inclusive community for minority groups in STEAM through educational programming and networking opportunities.
Girls in STEAM focuses on supporting access to technology & education for girls, women, gender-diverse people, and the LGBTQ+ community, as people from these communities are often underrepresented in STEAM-based fields and in leadership roles for big tech companies. Through merging “A (art & design)” with “STEM”, I hope to share creative possibilities and tools in tech education, that are not traditionally taught in schools. In a post-pandemic world where so much of our lives revolve around technology, it is essential that there is representation in the STEM industry and in leadership roles within big tech companies, so that the technologies made for humans are truly inclusive to everyone.
I love working with people and utilizing both my creative & technical sides. I hope to continue to work in spaces that resonate with my values in facilitating healthy communities and lifelong learning. 🌱
